If you think that Jaimie Branch looks as though she is on her way to a punk performance, a hip-hop concert or football: it could be any of the above. The American trumpet player moves with equal ease in jazz, punk and rap worlds, and her recent record Fly or Die II: Bird Dogs of Paradise was recorded in London in the Total Refreshment Centre – more of a football canteen than a fancy jazz club. In a way, Branch brings all those things to her music, but then in the most unpredictable or even the most avant-garde way imaginable. The albums from the influential trumpet player – the predecessor Fly or Die is no less brilliant – have thorns, they sting, but they can also funk and groove like no other. No, really, anyone who wants to be surprised should not miss any of her three sets at Gent Jazz this summer.
