Stef Kamil Carlens is in his seventh childhood. After showing his talent in recent decades with dEUS, Kiss My Jazz, A Beatband, Moondog Jr. and others. and Zita Swoon (Group), the singer-songwriter released his first solo album four years ago: Stuck in the Status Quo. The reactions? Loving. But not as enthusiastic as the criticisms that Carlens received last year, when he released successor Making Sense Of ∞ (pronounced: Making Sense of Infinity). “Impossible to indicate one highlight here,” Humo concluded his four-star review. “There are nine of them.” De Morgen then noted that the album is “intriguing and varied” in every respect, with “songs that are as rich as they are subtly arranged”. Guest musicians such as Nathan “Black Flower” Daems certainly have a part in this – they happily jump from funk over blues to jazz – although the album is primarily the unbelievably inspired culmination of thirty years of experiment, introspection and rock-solid songwriting.
