‘Exciting, urban, purified: Steven De bruyn has released the best album of his career’, Knack Focus recently wrote about the first solo record from ‘one of the world’s best harmonica players’. That was no small compliment if you know that De bruyn is the man behind the legendary Belgian blues/roots bands El Fish and The Rhythm Junks, and that he is thus accustomed to the superlatives. But with the wonderfully abrasive album The Eternal Perhaps, which smoothly shifts from jazz towards blues, De bruyn has convincingly put himself on the map as a solo artist. The record is so adventurous, surprising and multi-layered that – after hitting play three times – just put it on repeat. Or as Het Nieuwsblad concluded its four-star review: ‘A gem.’
