After her performance at Gent Jazz in 2015, Knack Focus wrote: ‘Give Rhiannon Giddens another record or two and she can perform here on a bigger stage.’ Prophetic words! In 2017, Giddens released the album Freedom Highway, described by door Pitchfork as proof that American folk can still be relevant and complex, and in 2019 added There Is No Other, which received no less than five stars from The Guardian. ‘Giddens is going supernova’, the British paper wrote, ‘and it’s a blistering thing’. For the latter album, she also called on the Italian jazz pianist Francesco Turrisi, who will also be there at Gent Jazz, and with the help of top producer Joe Henry, the two went looking for the overlap between Western, African and Arab folk music. The result? ‘Blistering’ comes close, yes. ‘Exquisite’ does too. And why not: ‘Amazing!’
