‘In the jazz world, you have to work ten times as hard as a woman to be taken seriously’, British guitarist Shirley Tetteh reported to The Guardian just over a year ago. That might explain why her female jazz collective Nérija typically gets reviews that are ten times better than those for their male competitors, whom they are surpassing with increasing ease. Today, Nérija is even regularly called a supergroup – on the one hand, because there is always so much talent on stage, and on the other, because they often sound like a rock ‘n roll band that thrillingly kneads together jazz, funk, reggae and surf into one delicious whole. (Which is NOT to say that they are certainly good cooks as well.) Oh, and as far as Tetteh is concerned, how great is it that her guitar takes on such a prominent role in one of today’s most sizzling London jazz bands? The scene needed another guitarist.
