7 July: Jazz died in 1959...

07 juli

... or at least that’s what Nicholas Payton, trumpeter from New Orleans and special guest of living saxophone legend Pharoah Sanders, claims. Nothing like a little discussion to keep the day going. No matter how you choose to define jazz, resistance runs in its DNA. Trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire is cut from the same cloth. In his “Rollcall For Those Absent” for instance, a child’s voice reads the names of black Americans killed by police violence. Akinmusire has already played together with two of the other class acts standing on the stage on 7 July: musical jack-of-all-trades Vijay Iyer and Jason Moran, who in 2003 gave one of the most powerful concerts ever in our festival history. Can you tell we’re secretly hoping they’ll end up on stage together?

FUNDAMENT, with its small army of bass instruments, will set this day into motion. Dan Weiss Starebaby energetically concludes the day with his Metal Jazz, proving that these two genres mash well together. You’re headbanging too, right?
