Mulatu Astatke: 20h45
Your ticket gives you access to all concerts of this festival day. This is a standing concert day.
You could call Mulatu Astatke, the godfather of the Ethio-jazz, the wise elder on July 3, a day full of Young Turks. (It’s quite possible there are bands playing Gent Jazz Festival that day whose collective age is not even remotely close to that of Astatke.) But if you know that Jim Jarmusch chose seven of his songs for the soundtrack of his excellent movie Broken Flowers and that, for the past twenty years, he has been sampled by everyone from Kanye West and Nas to Madlib and Oddisee, then you know Astatke belongs on that stage, on July 3.
