“Nina Simone was fierce”, says Judi Jackson. “She went to places in her music that most artists only dream about.” The now 26-year-old jazz singer and multi-instrumentalist was first introduced to Simone, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald at the age of fourteen, when world-renowned trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, whom Jackson had met at a concert (where she told him she wanted to become an artist who pushed boundaries), sent her a box of CDs with recordings by some of the greatest jazz divas of all time – their voices telling of lives lived, battles fought, stories demanding to be heard. Today, Jackson is herself on her way to becoming a force in jazz music to be reckoned with.
