Ludwig van Beethoven made quite a few of them, just like Béla Bartók and György Ligeti, and now the American jazz master John Zorn – leading man of the New York avant-garde scene – has also written his share of bagatelles. Three hundred, to be precise. Officially, a ‘bagatelle’ is a ‘a short unpretentious instrumental composition’, but John Zorn would not be John Zorn, if he didn’t want his to be delectably complex compositions. Curious? Don’t go looking for a recording of previous performances: Zorn forbids ‘m! The only way to hear the unique compositions is in person. And at Gent Jazz Festival, Zorn will serve up over five hours of his bagatelles with an impressive number of renowned jazz musicians – in fourteen different formations!
