Mark Helias (bass), Gerry Hemingway (drums), and Ray Anderson (trombone)
Forty years… that’s how long the unconventional BassDrumBone jazz trio has been active in the international jazz scene. Not only is this a reason to raise a glass in a toast to them, it’s also the perfect excuse to invite them to the Gent Jazz Festival. Twice the fun! Or triple the fun because their double album, The Long Road, was released at the end of 2016 as a run-up to their anniversary, with contributions from superior guest musicians, sax player Joe Lovano and pianist Jason Moran. It happens to be a pretty massive experiment for a trio that strictly forbade fraternising with other musicians for forty years. The double album was also flooded with praise from around the world almost as soon as it was released, which proves that this trio still has a lot to contribute to the contemporary jazz scene. Both in the studio and on the stage!
